The History of Roulette

Posted By Diego | Roulette-Strategy News | February 7, 2010, 12:21 AM |

When you think Casino’s you automatically think of Roulette. This exciting game has mesmerised gamblers in both traditional gambling halls as well as the more modern phenomena
that are online casinos. But where did this game come from and what makes it so popular?

The roulette wheel was created entirely by chance by French mathematician Blaise Pascal in 1655.  Pascal was trying to invent a machine that would generate perpetual motion. Although his attempt was unsuccessful, through this process he had unknowingly invented what is now one of the most universally recognised games in casino history. It was in fact two centuries later that the game as we know it was created using Pascal’s blue prints by the Blanc brothers.

The brothers (Francois and Louis) changed the colours of the wheel to the iconic Red and Black. They also numbered the pockets from 1-36 and added the green zero pocket for good measure. Some superstitious folk believed the brothers had sold their soul to the devil as the sum of all the numbers on the wheel totalled 666 (widely referred to as the number of The Beast). This however did not deter everyone and more and more people began to enjoy the thrill of the table.

The real popularity of the game came when French settlers brought it with them over the Atlantic to New Orleans. It was commonly found in saloons and gambling halls where both cowboys and miners enjoyed this new exciting pastime.  Many of these thrill seekers waged small fortunes on each spin with the lure that they could double their money.

The game has changed very little since them. Some casino’s added an additional pocket in the wheel to increase the house odds of winning. Thankfully this did not deter the keen gamer and Roulette remains a common fixture in all casinos today.

Comparisons have been drawn between roulette and bingo.  However roulette allows you to choose your numbers, whereas in bingo they are given to you.  Both do, however, use a method of choosing random numbers for the players.  Also they have both made a successful transition into the world of online gaming with online roulette and online bingo some of the most popular online casino games available.

Perhaps the biggest draw to the Roulette table is that it is a game placed purely on chance, rather than
Texas Hold ‘Em
poker, for example, which requires skill, knowledge and practice on behalf of the player. A Roulette player can learn to play the odds but more often than not it is the table that decides which players will win and which will lose.

The simplicity of this game has eased its transition from casino halls to online casinos.
Advanced gaming technology means you can now get the thrill of the Roulette Wheel without even having to leave your own home while computer graphics can simulate the bouncing of the ball and the spinning of the wheel. This adds to the excitement and anticipation of each play ensuring a thrilling gaming experience and the promise of riches to boot.
